HAUS-fah-ter

Hausvater: /HAUS-fah-ter/
noun (German)
1. Housefather.
2. Spiritually responsible head of household, including the housefather as assisted by the housemother.
>> Example: "As the Hausvater should teach it [Christian doctrine] to the entire family ..."
(Martin Luther, Small Catechism, 1529)

“The eyes of all wait upon You, O Lord ...” is a familiar prayer that Christians commonly say at mealtime. Following is a musical arrangement for chanting the prayer.

Composition Note

Luther once remarked that “Music is a very fine art. The notes can make the words come alive.” It is my hope that the notes do so and only serve to point back to the text. The first portion is sung as a chant and the rest is rhythmic with two strong pulses per measure.
